Family Legal Cover, or ‘Legal Expenses Cover’ is intended to protect you and your household financially in the event of legal dispute, whether a third party is taking action against you or you need to bring charges against someone else.
This feature extends to a wide range of legal scenarios including neighbourly disputes, tax investigations, identity theft, personal injury and more. You can find out more about Family Legal Cover and what it includes here.
At Caleb Roberts Insurance Services, as well as offering tailored Home Insurance, we will work closely with you to determine whether you will benefit from any optional add-on features, including Family Legal Cover. To help you understand more about this option, we take a look at some of the key things that you should know below:
1. It’s often an optional add-on to standard Home Insurance
Some Home Insurance policies do cover for a limited amount of legal expenses, but even if yours does have this feature included as standard, it may not be sufficient to your requirements. Mostly, Family Legal Cover is available as an optional add-on to your existing Building and Contents Insurance. In a recent study by Defaqto, they found that around 29% of 372 buildings insurance policies included this cover, while 58% listed it as an optional feature.
2. It doesn’t cover for every legal dispute
As with any Legal Expenses Cover, your insurer will only accept your claim if they deem your case to have a reasonable chance of success. It’s also worth noting that this feature does not cover for compensation, so if the court does find you liable to pay this, you will need to fund this yourself.
3. You will need different protection for motor disputes
Even if your car is kept at your home, Family Legal Cover does not include cover for any motor-related claims including contract disputes or personal injury claims. If you do wish to account for such claims, you may wish to consider Motor Legal Protection which offers both you and your passengers financial support when raising or defending a claim that wasn’t your fault.
For further support, there’s also the option of taking out Advanced Motor Legal Protection which offers additional features such as making multiple claims and 14-day replacement vehicle cover.

4. It’s inexpensive
While at Caleb Roberts Insurance Services we believe that cost isn’t the top priority when it comes to finding the right cover – it’s all about the quality of the policy – we do understand that it will be a factor in your considerations. Family Legal Cover can be added to existing Buildings and Contents Policy for as little as £15 per month, reimbursing the policyholder for legal costs up to a maximum of £75,000. The cost of making or defending a case can quickly add up, often running into tens of thousands of pounds; this policy can give you the peace of mind you need that you have this financial security in place should you need it.
5. You will have access to round-the-clock support
When it comes to making or defending a legal claim, you will likely have a lot of questions along the way. When you take out your Family Legal Cover through Caleb Roberts Insurance Services, you will have access to a 24-hour free legal advice line as part of your policy, as well as support from your dedicated claims handler. With this cover, you can start a claim at any time of day using the 24/7 claims reporting line.
