As we continue to ponder what the implications of Brexit will be, it’s important to consider the effects of a ‘no deal’ outcome when driving abroad.
A ‘no deal’ Brexit would mean physical Green Cards would need to carried by UK motorists when driving in the European Economic Area (EAA). For those who regularly drive abroad, we would advise you consider this situation now to avoid any unwanted complications.
The Association of British Insurers has encouraged those customers to contact your Broker or Insurer and ensure they have the correct cover in place.
A Green Card can take a month to come through, so it’s time to act now if you require one.
According to a BBC report:
- The NI Department for the Economy suggests that there are approximately 110 million crossings between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland each year. This includes cars, HGVs and buses/coaches.
- Eurotunnel Shuttle Services carried 1.6 million trucks and 2.6 million cars in 2017 (total number; both directions).
- According to official statistics, in 2017 there were 2.4 million HGVs travelling from Great Britain to Europe (excluding NI) and 370,000 HGVs travelling from Great Britain to Northern Ireland.
